Standard Pool Size: Common Dimensions and Depths

There is no single standard pool size: guides cite 14 x 28 to 16 x 32 ft (HomeGuide), yet 2025 permits ran smaller, with a median 412 sq ft in Mesa, AZ and 10,300 gallons in Las Vegas.

No building code defines a standard pool size for homes. The 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) regulates depth, slopes, exits and diving envelopes, and allows a construction tolerance of plus or minus 3 inches on length, width and depth, but it never says how long or wide a backyard pool should be. The sizes people call standard come from three places: vinyl liner kits, fiberglass molds and builder habit.

HomeGuide lists vinyl liner pools most often at 16 x 32, 18 x 36 and 20 x 40 ft, fiberglass from 10 x 24 to 16 x 40 ft, and concrete at any dimension. Fiberglass has a hard ceiling: Thursday Pools says most shells max out at 16 feet wide and 41 feet long because they ship in one piece by road. Builder guides then settle on a range. HomeGuide calls 14 x 28 to 16 x 32 ft the average family pool, and Western Lehigh Services names 16 x 32 ft as the average residential size.

Permit data tell a smaller story. Of 224 new pool permits in Mesa, Arizona in 2025 that stated a pool area and a usable value, the median was 412 sq ft, closer to a 14 x 28 ft pool (392 sq ft) than a 16 x 32 (512 sq ft). In Las Vegas the median permitted volume was 10,300 gallons, which in Akron’s table is a 14 x 28 ft pool at 3.5 ft average depth.

Average depth moves volume as much as footprint does. A 16 x 32 ft pool holds 15,400 gallons at a 4 ft average and 19,200 at 5 ft, a difference of one pool size class. That is why builder guides disagree on gallons for the same footprint: CPSA puts a 16 x 32 at about 20,000 gallons, which in Akron’s table needs an average depth between 5 and 5.5 ft.

Akron multiplies by 7.5 gallons per cubic foot; the USGS figure is 7.48, a 0.3% gap. Our pool volume calculator uses 7.48. Either way, a footprint formula is a ceiling for factory shells. Leisure Pools lists its Ultimate 30 at 30 ft 0 in x 15 ft 5 in, 4 ft 3 in to 6 ft 0 in deep, holding 11,346 gallons. A plain rectangle formula on those numbers gives 17,730 gallons, 56% more, because Leisure measures to the outside edges and the shell’s steps and benches displace water. Use the maker’s gallons when it publishes them.

In Las Vegas, 47.2% of permits with a usable value were under 10,000 gallons and 15.6% were 15,000 gallons or more. These are two desert cities, not a national figure; no national dataset of built pool sizes exists that we could find.

Size and price do not track neatly. Mesa’s median declared value rises from $44,501 under 350 sq ft to $57,500 at 500 sq ft or more, but Las Vegas medians run $64,990, $75,000 and $70,000 across its three bands. Features, finishes and site work outweigh a few hundred square feet of water. The Phoenix pool builders page covers the Valley’s permits and barrier rules.

Standard pool depth: shallow ends, deep ends and diving

Depth is where the code does set numbers. Under ISPSC 807.2 the shallowest point of a residential inground pool must be 33 inches to 4 feet deep. Anything over 5 feet is deep area and needs its own way in and out (809.3). Handholds are required once the pool is deeper than 42 inches (324.1), and benches and swimouts sit no more than 20 inches down (809.9). The floor may slope no steeper than 1 in 7 in the shallow end and 1 in 3 in the deep end.

Diving changes the size, not just the depth. ISPSC Table 804.1 sets a minimum diving water envelope: a Type I pool needs at least 28 ft 9 in from the deep-end wall to the start of the shallow end, Type III and IV need 31 ft 3 in, and Type V needs 36 ft 9 in. Add a shallow area and a diving pool is rarely shorter than the 16 x 40 ft class; River Pools’ T40, 3 ft 8 in to 8 ft 6 in deep, is one example its maker calls Type III.

Lap pool and Olympic pool dimensions

Competition pools are the only pools with a true standard size. FINA’s Facilities Rules, valid from August 5, 2021, fix lengths at 50 or 25 metres, set no minimum width, require lanes of at least 2.5 m (8.2 ft), and ask for 1.35 m (4.4 ft) of depth from 1.0 to at least 6.0 m out from the wall where starting blocks are used, 1.0 m (3.3 ft) elsewhere.

An Olympic pool is 50 m by at least 25 m (164.0 x 82.0 ft). World Aquatics’ certification checklist, in force from January 1, 2024, sets a 2.5 m (8.2 ft) minimum depth for Olympic and World Championships 50 m pools and 3 m where artistic swimming shares the pool. Some guides still list 2 m, the minimum in FINA’s 2021 rule FR 2.2.4. At the 2024 minimum, the water alone is 3,125 cubic metres, about 825,480 US gallons.

Backyard lap pools borrow the lane, not the length. River Pools sells swim-lane shells from 10 x 25 to 13.6 x 35 ft, wide enough for one 2.5 m competition lane, and Angi’s 2026 guide puts the average lap pool at $44,000.

Pool sizes for families, entertaining and small yards

Size advice from builders is opinion, not measurement, but it is consistent. California Pools recommends at least 16 x 32 ft for a family of 3 to 5 and 18 x 36 ft for 6 to 8, and describes a standard play pool as 75 ft around its edge. HomeGuide groups small or plunge pools at 10 x 16 to 12 x 24 ft (160 to 288 sq ft), average family pools at 14 x 28 to 16 x 32 ft, and large pools at 18 x 36 to 20 x 40 ft (648 to 800 sq ft).

The yard sets the real limit. The 2024 ISPSC requires a barrier at least 48 inches high and keeps pool equipment outside the barrier at least 36 inches from it, so the fence line and equipment pad come out of the same lot as the water. If the numbers do not fit, compare a cocktail pool, a plunge pool or other small inground pool options.

Cost guides price size roughly in line with area. Angi’s 2026 averages run from $25,200 for a 12 x 24 ft pool to $44,800 for a 16 x 32 and $70,000 for a 20 x 40, while HomeGuide’s ranges are far wider because finish and features vary more than size. For type-by-type ranges see the inground pool cost guide.

Some public numbers follow area directly. San Diego’s building valuation schedule values a gunite pool at $114 per square foot of surface, and Scottsdale charges $0.61 per square foot on top of fixed pool fees. Water follows area and volume: filling 10,000 gallons in Phoenix cost $90.31 and 30,000 gallons $270.92 at October 2026 rates (our fill cost study), and evaporation scales with surface. The EPA estimates an uncovered 500 sq ft pool loses 12,000 to 31,000 gallons a year; the City of Mesa puts a 400 sq ft pool at 19,664 gallons.

How to size a pool for your lot, step by step

  1. Measure the usable yardGet the lot survey, then subtract setbacks and easements your city lists for pools.
  2. Draw the barrier and equipment padAllow for a fence at least 48 inches high under the ISPSC (60 in some states) and keep equipment at least 36 inches outside it.
  3. Decide on divingA diving pool needs a Type I to V envelope at least 28 ft 9 in long in the deep end; without a board, a shallow end of 33 inches to 4 feet keeps more water usable.
  4. Pick the footprint for the useHomeGuide’s small class tops out at 288 sq ft and its average family class runs 392 to 512 sq ft; laps need length and a lane at least 2.5 m wide.
  5. Compute the gallonsUse average depth, not deep-end depth, and the calculator below.
  6. Check fiberglass sizesIf the pool is 16 ft wide or less, compare stock shells; wider means concrete or vinyl.
  7. Price two sizesAsk builders to quote your first choice and one size smaller.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard size for a pool?

There is no code standard. Guides cite 14 x 28 to 16 x 32 ft as average (HomeGuide, 2026), and vinyl kits come most often in 16 x 32, 18 x 36 and 20 x 40 ft. In 2025 permits, the median was 412 sq ft in Mesa, AZ and 10,300 gallons in Las Vegas.

Is 16×32 a small pool?

No. At 512 sq ft it is above Mesa’s 2025 median of 412 sq ft, and only 24.1% of Mesa permits with a stated area were 500 sq ft or more. California Pools recommends it as the minimum for a family of 3 to 5.

Is a 15×30 pool big enough?

For most households, yes. It covers 450 sq ft, a little above Mesa’s 2025 median, and holds about 15,200 gallons at a 4.5 ft average depth (City of Akron table). It is too short for a diving envelope.

Is a 10×20 pool too small?

For laps, yes; for cooling off and lounging, no. It covers 200 sq ft, and River Pools sells a 10 x 20 ft R Series shell as its smallest rectangle.

Is a 12×24 pool considered small?

Yes. HomeGuide puts 12 x 24 ft at the top of its small or plunge category (288 sq ft). It holds about 9,700 gallons at 4.5 ft average depth (City of Akron).

How much does a 12×24 inground pool cost on average?

Angi’s 2026 average is $25,200; HomeGuide’s installed range is $23,000 to $72,000. Type, finish and site work explain the spread.

How many gallons is a 16×32 pool?

About 15,400 gallons at a 4 ft average depth, 17,300 at 4.5 ft and 19,200 at 5 ft, per the City of Akron’s table.

Is a 10,000 gallon pool considered small?

It is typical in some markets. The 2025 median on Las Vegas pool permits was 10,300 gallons, and 47.2% of permits with a usable value were under 10,000 gallons.

How big is a 20,000 gallon pool?

Roughly 18 x 36 ft at a 4 ft average depth (19,400 gallons) or 16 x 32 ft at 5.5 ft (21,100), using the City of Akron table.

Is 30,000 gallons a big pool?

Yes. That is a 20 x 40 ft pool at a 5 ft average depth (City of Akron). In Las Vegas only 15.6% of 2025 permits were 15,000 gallons or more.

What's the best depth for a backyard pool?

The 2024 ISPSC sets the shallowest point at 33 inches to 4 feet. Without a board, staying at or under 5 feet avoids the code’s deep-area exit requirement. Diving needs 7 ft 6 in to 9 ft under Table 804.1.

Is a 6 foot pool deep enough for diving?

Not for a diving board under the ISPSC: the shallowest diving envelope (Type I) lists a deepest minimum of 7 ft 6 in. The MAHC annex cites an American Red Cross recommendation of nine feet. This is not safety advice.

What size is an Olympic pool?

50 m long and at least 25 m wide (164.0 x 82.0 ft), with a 2.5 m (8.2 ft) minimum depth under World Aquatics’ certification checklist in force from January 1, 2024.

What is the best size pool for a family of four?

Builders often suggest 16 x 32 ft (California Pools), but Mesa’s 2025 permit median was 412 sq ft, about 14 x 29 ft. Match it to how many people swim at once and the yard left after the fence.
