Pool Deck Contractors: Pavers, Travertine and Concrete Decks
Pool deck contractors pour, lay and resurface the surface around your pool, from broom-finish concrete to pavers and travertine. Compare 2026 prices per square foot, the code rules for slope and slip resistance, and when to resurface.
- ✓CostA concrete pool deck runs $6 to $18+ per square foot installed; concrete pavers $12 to $45 (ConcreteNetwork, February 2026).
- ✓CodeThe 2024 pool code caps deck slope at 1/2 inch per foot and sets a wet slip test, DCOF 0.42 or higher.
- ✓ResurfaceOverlays on a sound slab cost $4 to $12 per square foot, a fraction of a tear-out and re-pour.
What pool deck contractors build and repair
Three kinds of firms do this work, and the right one depends on the surface you choose.
- Pool builders pour the deck and coping as part of a new pool, often through a concrete subcontractor. See inground pool builders.
- Decorative concrete contractors handle broom, stamped and exposed-aggregate decks, overlays and crack repair.
- Hardscape and paver installers lay concrete pavers, travertine and natural stone on a compacted base, and often reset coping.
Whoever you hire, the job is more than a surface. Good pool deck contractors plan drainage away from the pool, isolation joints at the coping, control joints in the slab, and a finish that grips when wet. Those details are written into the pool code, covered further down.

Pool deck materials compared: concrete, pavers, travertine, stone and wood
| Surface | Installed cost per sq ft (national) | Phoenix contractor price | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Broom-finish concrete | $6 to $11 simple design (ConcreteNetwork) | $9 to $16 | Lowest cost; control joints and a textured finish matter |
| Stamped or colored concrete | $11 to $18 custom (ConcreteNetwork); $8 to $19 stamped patio (HomeGuide) | $14 to $24 | Looks like stone or wood; needs resealing |
| Concrete pavers | $12 to $45 (ConcreteNetwork); $10 to $17 paver patio (HomeGuide) | $16 to $28 | Single pavers can be lifted and replaced; joints need sand upkeep |
| Travertine pavers | No national figure published by these sources | $20 to $34; premium $26 to $40 | Choose tumbled, not honed or polished, near water |
| Flagstone or natural stone | $15 to $32 flagstone; $16 to $35 natural stone (HomeGuide) | Not listed | Irregular joints; check wet slip rating |
| Brick pavers | $10 to $30 (ConcreteNetwork) | Not listed | Durable; moisture in joints can loosen units |
| Rubber surfacing | $12 to $20+ (ConcreteNetwork) | Not listed | Soft underfoot; often used as an overlay |
| Wood or composite (raised) | $15 to $40+ wood (ConcreteNetwork); $40 to $80 composite (HomeGuide) | Not listed | Common for above-ground pools; boards need drainage gaps |

Concrete is the budget choice. Pavers cost more but let a contractor lift and reset a single unit after root or settlement damage, which ConcreteNetwork names as their main advantage. Travertine is priced like a premium paver; a Phoenix contractor lists $20 to $34 per square foot and builds it on 2 to 3 inches of compacted base with a 1 inch sand bed. Wood and composite belong mostly on raised decks for above-ground pools.
An independent price check: California's assessor cost tables
Contractor and lead-site prices are hard to verify. A state cost manual is not selling anything.
Every year the California State Board of Equalization publishes replacement costs that county assessors use to value improvements, including pool decks. The January 2026 edition lists concrete pool decking at $13.35 per square foot, broom-finish concrete paving at $11.32, flagstone at $31.29 and redwood pool decking at $61.13. These are California figures and include materials and labor, so they run above many national lead-site numbers for plain concrete.
Stamped concrete value is the 1,001 to 10,000 sq ft column; others are the smallest size band or a flat rate.

What a whole pool deck costs at 300, 600 and 900 square feet
ConcreteNetwork puts the average US pool deck at 900 square feet, or $5,400 to $16,200+ in concrete; it does not say how it measured that. Many decks are smaller, so the table multiplies published rates by three sizes. Coping, drains, permits and demolition are extra unless the row says otherwise.
| Surface and rate source | Rate per sq ft | 300 sq ft | 600 sq ft | 900 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple concrete (ConcreteNetwork) | $6 to $11 | $1,800 to $3,300 | $3,600 to $6,600 | $5,400 to $9,900 |
| Custom decorative concrete (ConcreteNetwork) | $11 to $18 | $3,300 to $5,400 | $6,600 to $10,800 | $9,900 to $16,200 |
| Concrete pavers (ConcreteNetwork) | $12 to $45 | $3,600 to $13,500 | $7,200 to $27,000 | $10,800 to $40,500 |
| Travertine pavers (AE Outdoor Living, Phoenix) | $20 to $34 | $6,000 to $10,200 | $12,000 to $20,400 | $18,000 to $30,600 |
| Overlay on an existing slab (ConcreteNetwork) | $4 to $8 | $1,200 to $2,400 | $2,400 to $4,800 | $3,600 to $7,200 |
| Tear-out of old concrete (ConcreteNetwork) | $2 to $6 | $600 to $1,800 | $1,200 to $3,600 | $1,800 to $5,400 |

Code rules every pool deck contractor should follow
Section 306 of the 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code covers decks. Many states and cities adopt it, sometimes with changes.
| Deck surface | Minimum drainage slope (inch per foot) |
|---|---|
| Carpet | 1/2 |
| Exposed aggregate | 1/4 |
| Textured, hand-finished concrete | 1/8 |
| Travertine or brick-set pavers, residential pools | 1/8 |
| Travertine or brick-set pavers, public pools | 3/8 |
| Wood | 1/8 |
| Wood/plastic composite | 1/8 |
| Any surface: maximum slope | 1/2 |

- Slip resistance Deck, coping and step surfaces must be slip resistant and cleanable; where tested wet, the code cites a DCOF of 0.42 or higher (ANSI A326) or a P4 pendulum rating.
- Slope and drainage Slope away from the pool or toward deck drains, never steeper than 1/2 inch per foot. A flatter deck passes if water pools no deeper than 1/8 inch 20 minutes after wetting.
- Joints The joint where coping meets a concrete deck must be watertight and protect the coping from slab movement; control joints limit random cracks.
- Gaps and edges Wood deck boards get 1/8 to 1/2 inch gaps; the gap to an adjoining walk is 3/4 inch at most, with no more than 1/4 inch height difference. Deck edges must be radiused or tapered.
- Barrier A new deck can change the barrier. The same code sets a 48 inch minimum barrier height, and 20 of 51 jurisdictions require pool barriers statewide (pool fence laws by state).
Resurface or replace an existing pool deck
| Option | Published cost | Source | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic resurfacing overlay | $4 to $8 per sq ft | ConcreteNetwork (Feb 2026) | Sound slab, surface wear, hairline cracks |
| Decorative overlay | $6 to $12+ per sq ft | ConcreteNetwork (Feb 2026) | Sound slab, new look wanted |
| Concrete deck resurfacing | $3 to $12 per sq ft | HomeGuide (Dec 2025) | Same as above |
| Remove old concrete, then pour new | $2 to $6 per sq ft removal plus $6 to $18+ new | ConcreteNetwork (Feb 2026) | Settled, heaved or badly cracked slab |
| Replace an existing deck | About $5 per sq ft more than new | HomeGuide (Dec 2025) | Any full tear-out |
| Deck replacement, Washington DC area | $13,000 to $38,000+ | Beltway Pools | Regional contractor estimate |

An overlay only works on a slab that is sound. Heaving, settling or wide structural cracks mean tear-out: $2 to $6 per square foot to remove old concrete before paying for the new surface. If the pool interior is also due, doing both at once saves a second round of mess; our pool remodeling page covers resurfacing the pool itself.
Heat and traction underfoot
Pavement gets hot. In an Arizona pilot cited by the US Environmental Protection Agency, conventional asphalt reached up to 152F at mid-day while cool pavements stayed 10 to 16F cooler. That study measured asphalt, not pool decks, but the lesson carries over: lighter, more reflective surfaces are easier on bare feet. In Phoenix the normal daily high peaks at 106.9F in early July (NOAA 1991 to 2020 normals; see pool season length by city).
Traction matters as much as temperature. Most pool injuries happen in summer: 63.0% of US pool injuries treated in emergency departments from 2015 to 2024 came in June, July or August (pool injury statistics). For stone, a tumbled finish keeps grip when wet; honed or polished stone does not belong next to the water. Ask your contractor for the product’s wet slip test data.

Coping and the deck-to-pool joint
Coping caps the pool wall and meets the deck, so it moves when the deck moves. The code requires that joint to be watertight and built to protect the coping and its mortar bed. Budget for it separately: Anthony & Sylvan Pools puts coping repair at $30 to $50 per linear foot, and a Washington DC area remodeler quotes $50 to $160 per linear foot for full replacement and $8 to $20 per linear foot to reseal the expansion joint.
Hiring a pool deck contractor: licenses and questions to ask
Licensing for deck work follows general contractor rules in most states. California requires a license on jobs of $1,000 or more, as does Arizona; Nevada’s A-10c pool repair class names coating of pool decks in its scope; and 16 states leave pool contractor licensing to local government (pool contractor license requirements). Many cities require a permit for a new deck; HomeGuide puts deck permit fees at $50 to $150.
- Base and compaction What base material, how thick, and how is it compacted?
- Drainage plan Which way does the deck slope, and where do drains discharge?
- Joints and sealing Where do control and isolation joints go, and what sealant is used at the coping?
- Slip data Can you show the wet slip test result for this surface?
- Warranty What is covered for settling, cracking and sealer failure, and for how long?

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to put a deck around an inground pool?
For concrete, $6 to $18+ per square foot (ConcreteNetwork, February 2026). At ConcreteNetwork’s stated average deck size of 900 square feet, that is $5,400 to $16,200+. Pavers and travertine cost more.
How much does it cost to resurface a pool deck?
Basic concrete resurfacing runs $4 to $8 per square foot and decorative overlays $6 to $12+ (ConcreteNetwork). HomeGuide gives $3 to $12 per square foot for concrete pool deck resurfacing.
What is the best pool deck resurfacing material?
For a sound concrete slab, a textured cement-based overlay is a common choice because it bonds to the existing slab and can be finished for grip (ConcreteNetwork prices overlays at $4 to $12+ per square foot). Whatever you choose should meet the code’s wet slip test, a DCOF of 0.42 or higher under the 2024 ISPSC.
Which is better for a pool deck, pavers or travertine?
Concrete pavers cost less ($12 to $45 nationally per ConcreteNetwork; $16 to $28 in one Phoenix price list) and come in many colors. Travertine costs more ($20 to $34 in the same Phoenix list) and is chosen for its natural stone look. Both can be lifted and reset unit by unit.
What type of pavers are best for pool decks?
Pavers with a textured, non-polished face that pass a wet slip test, laid on a compacted base with sand-filled joints. Light colors stay cooler in sun.
Is travertine too slippery for a pool deck?
Tumbled travertine keeps traction when wet; honed or polished travertine is not recommended next to a pool. Ask for test data showing the product meets the ISPSC wet slip requirement (DCOF 0.42 or a P4 pendulum rating).
What is the most affordable option for a pool deck?
Broom-finish concrete. ConcreteNetwork lists simple concrete designs at $6 to $11 per square foot, and California’s 2026 assessor tables price broom-finish paving at $11.32.
How much does a 20×20 pool deck cost?
A 20×20 deck is 400 square feet: about $2,400 to $7,200 in concrete at $6 to $18 per square foot (PC&S calculation). HomeGuide puts a 400 square foot raised wood deck at $10,000 to $20,000.
How much does a 12×12 pool deck cost?
A 12×12 deck is 144 square feet, so roughly $864 to $2,592 in concrete at ConcreteNetwork’s $6 to $18 per square foot, before permits and any coping work (PC&S calculation).
How much slope should a pool deck have?
Under the 2024 ISPSC, decks slope away from the pool or to drains, no steeper than 1/2 inch per foot. Minimums range from 1/8 inch per foot for textured concrete and residential pavers to 1/4 inch for exposed aggregate.
Do I need a permit for a pool deck?
Usually, especially for a new deck or one that changes the pool barrier. HomeGuide puts deck permit fees at $50 to $150; your city sets the rules. See our pool permit guide.
