Pool Equipment Prices 2026: A Retail Price Index for Pumps, Filters, Heaters, Cleaners and Chlorine
The headline

US pool equipment prices rose 8.1% from January 2024 to September 2026 on the PC&S Pool Equipment Price Index, built from archived Leslie's online listings, while pool chemical prices fell 11.3%. Equipment increases began in mid-2025 and continued after the February 2026 Supreme Court tariff ruling. Counting temporary markdowns, the changes are 5.7% and minus 15.9%.

How the index is built

  1. Defined 35 product types (19 equipment, 16 chemical) and selected 2 to 9 widely sold listings per type at Leslie’s, a national pool-supply retailer with a public online catalog (scripts/basket.py).
  2. Listed every successful Wayback Machine capture of each Leslie’s product ID from January 2024 to October 2026 through the CDX API (scripts/cdx_leslies.py), keeping the latest valid capture in each month.
  3. Parsed the schema.org Product price and the on-page price block of each capture, including any strike-through regular price (scripts/fetch_leslies.py, scripts/reparse_leslies_sale.py).
  4. Captured Home Depot prices for identical models from Wayback captures (scripts/fetch_homedepot.py) and Walmart.com search results live on October 14, 2026 (scripts/fetch_walmart.py), recording the marketplace seller.
  5. Linked renumbered Leslie’s IDs for the same product, dropped series with fewer than 3 prices, and computed the chained two-stage Jevons indexes (scripts/build_dataset.py).
  6. Pulled BLS PPI and CPI series from data.bls.gov and tariff actions from the Federal Register and the Supreme Court, and checked company statements in SEC filings (scripts/fetch_bls.py, scripts/fetch_sources.py).

Included: Products with at least 3 captured price points (brief rule): for the index, 3 monthly captures of the same Leslie’s listing; for the 2026 price tables, 3 captures of the same manufacturer model across retailers, so a single Walmart.com or Home Depot capture counts only when the same model has other captures. Identical models must match manufacturer model number. Walmart.com listings from third-party sellers were included only when the listing named the same manufacturer model; replacement parts, open-box, restored and look-alike items were excluded.

Excluded: Lowe’s (no matching models captured), Home Depot liquid chlorine pages (no online price), Walmart.com chemical listings (one live capture each, no archive history), products with fewer than 3 price points, captures where the page showed no price, and product types with fewer than 2 listings in 2026. Affiliate links and promotional bundles were not used.

Conflicting numbers: Where Leslie’s ran two product IDs for the same item, the later ID was used in overlapping months. Where a page showed a markdown, both prices were recorded; the headline index uses regular prices and the alternative uses listed prices.

Derived metrics: All computations are in scripts/build_dataset.py and scripts/build_report.py and logged in derived.csv with formulas. Percent changes use unrounded prices and are rounded to one decimal.

Caveats

  • One retailer drives the index; Leslie’s online prices may differ from its store prices and from other retailers.
  • Wayback captures are irregular; a price change is dated to the first capture that shows it, and active series fall to 24 equipment and 31 chemical listings in September 2026.
  • Markdown status could not be read for 18 of 821 captures.
  • No captured Leslie’s product page stated a country of origin (text search of every capture), nor did the Home Depot page checked by hand; Walmart.com search results do not show it. Hayward reports manufacturing facilities in Europe and China without product detail.
  • Equal weights across product types do not reflect household spending shares.

Method last reviewed October 14, 2026.

How the PC&S Pool Equipment Price Index is built

No public index tracks the shelf price of pool pumps, filters or chlorine. The PC&S index follows identical online listings at Leslie’s month to month from archived copies, then checks levels against Home Depot and Walmart.com.

The PC&S index follows the same product listings month to month, so a price change is a change for an identical item.
The PC&S index follows the same product listings month to month, so a price change is a change for an identical item.

Sources. Leslie’s (lesliespool.com archive) and Home Depot (homedepot.com archive) blocked automated requests from the PC&S network on October 14, 2026, so their prices come from archival copies in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine (web.archive.org), one capture per product per month, January 2024 to October 2026. Walmart.com (walmart.com) was captured live on October 14, 2026. Lowe’s had no matching models in archived captures and is excluded (see excluded.md).

Panel. PC&S tracked 147 Leslie’s product IDs in 35 product types (19 equipment, 16 chemical) and parsed 821 product-month captures. Renumbered listings for the same product were linked, giving 124 price series. Series with fewer than 3 captured prices were dropped, leaving 67 equipment and 41 chemical series and 798 captures in the indexes.

Formula. For each month, each series carries its last captured price forward until the next capture and contributes only between its first and last capture. The monthly change for a product type is the geometric mean of its series’ price relatives. The monthly change for the index is the geometric mean across product types with at least one active series, so each type has equal weight. Monthly changes are chained from January 2024 = 100. Equipment and chemicals are separate indexes.

Pool equipment prices since January 2024: index results through September 2026

Equipment and chemical prices moved in opposite directions. The equipment index ended September 2026 at 108.1 and the chemical index at 88.7, with the gap opening in the second half of 2025.

The equipment index stayed between 99.9 and 100.1 through 2024 and stood at 99.8 in January 2025 (United States, regular prices). It rose to 104.2 by January 2026 and reached 110.0 in June 2026, then eased to 108.1 in September 2026.

The chemical index was 98.8 in February 2025 and still 97.8 in February 2026, then fell from March 2026 to 88.7 in August and September 2026. Counting markdowns, the chemical index fell to 84.1, the lowest point in the series.

A matched-model sensitivity check gives the same direction: the median regular-price change for 37 equipment models captured in both 2024 and mid-2026 was 13.5%, and for 37 chemical products -10.0%. One reason the index rises less than the median is that it gives equal weight to each product type, including cleaners, whose prices changed little.

Did tariffs raise pool equipment prices? Shelf prices around each tariff action

Shelf prices did not jump on tariff dates. Equipment prices rose in steps from July 2025 to June 2026, and they kept rising after the Supreme Court ended the IEEPA tariffs. Hayward’s filings tie its 2025 and 2026 price increases partly to tariffs.
