On October 8, 2026 we collected 1,117 listing blocks from Pool Route Brokers, kept the 787 unique listings that state both a purchase price and monthly service billing, and dropped 20 with a multiple below 3x or above 25x as likely typos. Of the remaining 767, 516 (67.3%) are priced at exactly 12 times billing and 113 (14.7%) at exactly 10 times; 89.6% fall between 10x and 12x. Our count lines up with an independent October 2026 review by BigIdeasDB, which found 68.6% of 240+ listings asking exactly 12x.

The 6x figure in many guides is rare in the listings we read: only 24 of 767 priced below 10x. National Pool Route Sales says high-demand markets can reach 14x and some markets trade regularly at 10x (NPRS FAQ); Nevada listings in our sample sit at a 10.0x median. Superior Pool Routes calls 12x the industry standard and markets its own routes at 6x to 7x (Superior Pool Routes). These are sellers’ published positions, so compare them with the billing records of any route you consider.

What the price of a pool route buys, and what it leaves out

  • Recurring service billing only NPRS prices on base monthly service fees and excludes repairs, chemicals and equipment sales from the multiple.
  • No truck or equipment, as a rule Trucks and equipment are rarely included; turnkey listings may add a truck for a negotiated fee.
  • A 90-day account guarantee If a customer cancels within 90 days through no fault of the buyer, the seller replaces the account or refunds its share of the price.
  • Escrow holdback of 10% to 20% Part of the price sits in escrow until the guarantee period ends.
  • A non-compete, typically 5 years Stops the seller from winning the customers back.
  • Seller training of 2 to 4 weeks The buyer rides along to learn each pool and customer.

All six terms above come from one broker’s published FAQ (National Pool Route Sales); other sellers set their own. Get every term in the purchase contract with an account list attached.

Route sales usually transfer accounts, not the truck or tools.

Worked example: pricing and payback on a 40-account route

  1. Monthly billing40 accounts at the $88.82 median billing gives $3,552.80 a month in service revenue.
  2. Price at the median multipleAt 12 times, the route lists near $42,633.60, before chemicals stock, tools and insurance.
  3. PaybackSkimmer’s rule of thumb divides the multiple by the net service margin. At 12x and a 30% margin that is 40 months; Skimmer’s own 6x example pays back in 20.
  4. Drive costAt the IRS rate of 76 cents a mile (July to December 2026), 40 route miles a day cost about $30.40 a day, which is why dense routes command better prices.

Licenses and rules that do not transfer with a route

Buying accounts does not buy a license. 7 states issue a separate pool service or repair license class (Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii and Nevada), and active counts show how many operators hold them: 1,499 Florida servicing licenses, 1,608 California C-61/D-35 licenses and 593 Arizona service and repair licenses in 2026 (PC&S licensing research). Florida exempts routine cleaning that does not affect structure or equipment (Fla. Stat. 489.105), so a cleaning-only route and a repair business are treated differently.

Commercial accounts in a route can require a certified operator: 21 of 51 jurisdictions require one for public pools (PC&S operator certification research). In Texas, pool maintenance is a taxable service, so the buyer needs a sales tax permit (Texas Comptroller). Our guide on how to start a pool service business covers fees state by state.

Individual route buyers now compete with funded platforms. US pool service company targets rose from 0 in most years from 2015 to 2020 to 11 in 2025 and 7 in 2026 through October 6, and private equity or investor-backed buyers took 76.0% of the 25 US pool targets announced in 2025 and 2026 (PC&S acquisitions registry). SPS PoolCare reported more than 220 acquisitions and 50,000 recurring customers in July 2026 (SPS PoolCare); Cabana announced 6 California service acquisitions, including Aqua Pool Company with 1,300+ customers (Cabana); and Azureon named Subcomm Pools its 13th acquisition (O2 Investment Partners).

Platform deals rarely disclose prices, so they do not tell you what a small route is worth. They do mean a well-documented route has more than one kind of buyer when you sell.

Due diligence checklist before you buy a pool route

  • Account list with billing Name, address, service day, monthly rate and start date for every account.
  • 12 months of billing proof Bank deposits or billing software exports that match the list.
  • Rate per account versus market Compare with published local prices on our pool service cost page; under-priced accounts may churn when you raise rates.
  • Route density Map the stops; scattered routes cost more in fuel and time.
  • Guarantee, escrow and non-compete in writing Match the broker’s terms or better.
  • Commercial accounts Check operator certificate and health code requirements before you take them on.
  • Your license Confirm you can legally service the accounts in that state before closing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I pay for a pool route?

Brokers publish 10 to 12 times monthly service billing (NPRS). In 767 priced listings we analysed, the median was 12.0 times billing and $1,031 per account. Pay only for verified recurring billing.

How much is a pool route worth per account?

The median listed price was $1,031 per account in our sample, with a middle half of $872 to $1,283. Texas and Hawaii listings ran higher per account because monthly billing per pool was higher.

How do you value a pool route?

Multiply verified monthly service billing by a multiple, usually 10x to 12x, then adjust for density, rate levels, account age and churn. Repairs and chemicals are normally excluded from the billing figure.

Is buying a pool route worth it?

It buys revenue on day one. At 12x and a 30% net service margin, Skimmer’s formula implies a 40-month payback (Skimmer). Whether that works depends on your costs and how many accounts stay.

How do I buy a pool route?

Find a listing, request the account list and billing records, check your license in that state, negotiate guarantee, escrow and non-compete terms, then close and ride along with the seller for 2 to 4 weeks.

Are trucks and equipment included with a pool route?

Rarely. National Pool Route Sales says the price is for the recurring billing, and buyers usually supply their own vehicle and tools (NPRS).

What is a 90-day pool route guarantee?

If an account cancels within 90 days through no fault of the buyer, the seller replaces it or refunds its share of the price. A broker publishes escrow of 10% to 20% to back the guarantee.

Where can I sell a pool route in Florida?

Several route brokers list Florida routes, and Superior Pool Routes reports offices in Florida, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and California (Superior Pool Routes). General marketplaces also carry pool route listings. Confirm the buyer holds any Florida servicing license the accounts require.

Do I need a license to buy a pool route?

Not to buy, but often to service. In 7 states pool service or repair has its own license class, and commercial pools may need a certified operator.

Can I finance a pool route purchase?

National Pool Route Sales says bank loans are rare because there is no physical collateral, seller financing is occasional, SBA programs have strict rules and home equity lines are a common route (NPRS).
